What counts as a claim?
Anything a reader could check: figures and percentages, dates, names and job titles, quotations attributed to someone, and statements about events, products, laws or research.
Opinions and plans are not claims in this sense. The report concentrates on statements that can be checked.
What do the verdicts mean?
- Verified
- The sources support the claim as written.
- Contradicted
- The sources say something different. The finding explains what, so you can decide whether to change it.
- Unverifiable
- No reliable source could confirm or contradict it. Often worth a second look, not necessarily wrong.

What do I get back from a fact-check?
A findings report, on your results page and as a Word document you can download and share. It opens with a summary and a count of verified, contradicted and unverifiable claims, then lists each finding with the paragraph it came from, its reasoning and its sources.
Your document itself is not changed.
Fact-checking or proofreading: do I need both?
They answer different questions, and one upload can do both.

Can I fact-check through the API or an AI assistant?
Yes. Fact-checks can be submitted through the REST API and through the MCP server’s submit_fact_check tool, so an assistant such as Claude can check a document for you.

What is AI fact-checking?
AI fact-checking finds the statements of fact in a document and checks each one against sources. ProofedAI gives every claim a verdict (verified, contradicted or unverifiable) with its reasoning and the sources behind it.
Does a fact-check change my document?
No. A fact-check produces a report and leaves your text alone. If you want corrections in the file, proofread it in the same upload.
Can I see the sources?
Yes. Each finding lists the sources it relied on, so you can read them yourself before you change anything.
Does “contradicted” mean the claim is wrong?
It means the sources found say something different. Read the reasoning: sometimes the claim is out of date, sometimes it is the source. The decision stays with you.
What does “unverifiable” mean?
No reliable source could confirm or contradict the claim. That is common for internal figures, such as your own sales numbers, and it is a prompt to check them against your records.
How much does a fact-check cost?
The same as a proofread: 1 token per 1,000 words (or part), minimum one. Add a fact-check to a proofread and it costs the same again, so a 3,000-word report uses three tokens to proofread and three more to fact-check.
Is fact-checking available on every account?
Fact-checking is switched on per account. If you do not see the option when you upload, email ai@proofed.com and we can switch it on.
