What does an AI proofreader check?
Errors
Spelling, grammar and punctuation: the mistakes any proofread should catch, including commonly confused words such as affect and effect.
Consistency
One spelling, hyphenation and capitalisation for each term across the whole document, and numbers, dates and times written one way. This is where reading the whole file pays off.
Clarity, word choice and tone

Which file formats can ProofedAI proofread?
Eight formats, up to 96MB per file. Whatever you upload, your results page lists every change with its note.

Which languages and English dialects are supported?
Thirteen in all. Choose the one your readers use: the dialect decides spellings such as colour or color and centre or center.
English
British, American, Canadian, Irish, Australian, New Zealand, South African and Indian.
Other languages
Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese. Through the API and MCP server you can also name a region: Spanish for Spain or Mexico, French for France or Canada, German for Germany, Austria or Switzerland, and Portuguese for Portugal or Brazil.
Can ProofedAI follow our house style guide?
Yes. A style guide holds your organisation’s own rules: preferred spellings, terms to use and avoid, capitalisation, how to write numbers and dates. Choose it when you upload, and every change it drives cites the rule behind it, so a reviewer can see why.

What are Professional edit and Hyperpowered?
Professional edit
An optional second layer. Switch it on and ProofedAI also makes the changes a senior editor would: tighter wording, clearer sentences, house style. Leave it off when you only want errors fixed.
Hyperpowered
Runs your document on our premium engine, for higher quality at a higher cost. It is switched on per account, so ask us if you would like it.
How is AI proofreading different from spellcheck?
A spellchecker looks at one word at a time. A proofread reads the document.

Yes. ProofedAI is made by Proofed, whose human editors proofread documents every day. When you upload, tick the option to send the document to proofed.com for human review, and you can leave the editor a short brief.

What is AI proofreading?
AI proofreading uses a language model to find and fix errors in a finished document: spelling, grammar, punctuation and consistency. ProofedAI puts the fixes inside your file as tracked changes, annotations or comments, each with a short note.
Does ProofedAI rewrite my document?
No. A proofread fixes errors and inconsistencies and leaves your voice alone. For heavier editing, switch on Professional edit. For text that sounds machine-written, use Humanise.
Can I accept or reject each change?
Yes. In Word and OpenDocument files the changes are real tracked changes, so you accept or reject them one at a time or all at once. In PDFs they are annotations, and in PowerPoint they are comments on each slide.
Which dialect should I choose?
The one your readers use. The dialect decides spellings such as colour or color, and it takes priority over a style guide if the two disagree.
How large can a file be?
Up to 96MB per file.
How much does a proofread cost?
1 token per 1,000 words (or part), minimum one per document. A fact-check costs the same again, and every new account gets 10 free tokens on sign-up.
Can I send documents without using the website?
Yes: through the REST API, through the MCP server from an AI assistant, or by emailing the file from the address on your account.
